Meet The Herd?

Cardi P
Bold and sassy are perfect words to describe Cardi P! She can shake that booty! And if it’s the beat of the dinner drum ~ look out ~ she can run! Not only that, she has a powerful voice and uses it. She is the Prima Donna of Sweet Acres and she makes sure everyone knows it. She definitely has a BIG personality: fiesty, funny and outgoing are only just a few ways to describe her. But maybe that big personality is meant to mask the faded pain of knowing she was abandoned. Her family booked an overnight board with Sweet Acres and never returned. Cardi P is nothing if not a strong, resilient gal though, and her ATTITUDE will surely bring a smile to your face. She is the only pink pig at the Sanctuary and in the Fall/Winter/Spring seasons her white coat is long and thick and curly! She is a pretty girl who demands a second look. Make no mistake: she sees herself as the headliner of the show and you must, too. Okurrr!
Cardi P is a Taurus (no surprise there!). Her birthday is May 12, 2015.

Delilah
Delilah is our most “petite” pig which is surprising because she enjoys licking the other pigs’ bowls clean once they walk away from them. And that’s AFTER she’s had her own meal! Deliiah arrived at the Sanctuary in February of 2019 needing to be re-homed due to a change in family situation. She was only seven months old.. Because she has been with us from a young age, has been hugged and held, and feels loved and secure, she is a happy young lady. She has oodles of energy and entertains all with her silly ways. She is definitely the comedian in our group. She is also very protective of her best friend Ophelia who she snuggles up to, day AND night, to offer comfort and support. While Delilah does like to sneak out to clean up bowls, be hand fed treats from visitors, and graze on sweet grass, she is never too far from the breezeway door and wanders in and out of the house often…just to check up on her bestie.
Delilah is a Gemini. Her birthday is June 15, 2018.

Dozer
AKA The Bulldozer. This boy is definitely a gentle giant, but he once was also a bit of a Houdini. Maybe that’s not an accurate description because although he was good at disappearing, it wasn’t as a result of magic. He just kept breaking through the Sweet Acres’ gates! We think he was doing so, looking for his owners who had dropped him off because bylaws forced them to re-home him. Thankfully, his days of hijinks are long behind him now. Today, he is very happy at Sweet Acres where he knows he is wanted and loved, and receives all the hugs and belly rubs he could ever ask for. Even better, when he isn’t being cuddled by Kirsten, he is cozied up with the love of his life, Sadie. They are quite the striking pair and are 100% committed to each other. They have been a couple since early 2016. Sadie loves this strong gentleman with his thick, dark black coat and tiny white star placed perfectly centered on his forehead.
Dozer is a Capricorn. His birthday is December 31, 2015.

Miss Basil
Miss Basil is such a pretty lady, but sadly she did not arrive to Sweet Acres that way. She and her daughter were brought to the Sanctuary having been rescued from a horribly abusive breeder. They were being starved to death and terribly weak. Miss Basil had three offspring, but only one survived. Through Kirsten’s herculean efforts, mother and daughter were nursed to good physical health and appropriate weights. Miss Basil’s emotional health never healed, however. Years of neglect and abuse resulted in a lack of trust of humans and only Kirsten, with patience and compassion, has been able to establish a relationship with her. Miss Basil doesn’t mingle with visitors in the yard. She prefers the safety of her pen which is understandable. She may, however, come to the fence of her pen and cautiously take treats from visitors’ hands.
Miss Basil’s birthday is unknown however it is believed that she was born in 2015.

Noah
Noah was named for being the last one to enter the Sweet Acres ark. That was the intention anyway, but then seven more potbellys after him needed rescuing and so… Regardless, Noah is the Hebrew name meaning “rest” and “comfort” and both describe him perfectly! Noah was found wandering in a woman’s London backyard. He was approximately 3 months old and 13lbs. The nurturing he received at Sweet Acres has resulted in a gentle young pig who is very relaxed and happy. He loves all the animals at Sweet Acres and does whatever they tell him to! He’s just pleased to be alongside them. That said, he was best friends with the Snactuary’s oldest dog, Milo. As Milo’s wanderings around Sweet Acres slowed down, Noah spent much of his time by his side giving…comfort. You can’t help but love this one-of-a-kind gentleman.
Noah is a Cancerian. His birthday is July 22, 2017.

Ophelia
Sweet Ophelia is gentle by nature and by temperment which is a miracle given the circumstances she came from. Without care or regard she was fed to a point of terrible obesity. She was blinded by her fat and so heavy that she could not support her own weight. Her hooves had not been trimmed and were so long that they impeded her from walking. Kirsten and her crew swept in and brought Ophelia to her new home where she was carefully fed a proper diet and shed over 65 pounds. Her vision improved, and her hooves were trimmed but the toll of the previous excessive weight created spurs all along her vertebrae. This makes walking a challenge for her today. She is a determined girl however, and does get up for fresh air and a very short walk a couple of times a day, all under the watchful eyes of her very best friend, Delilah.
Ophelia was born in 2015. Her exact birthday is unknown.

Pebbles
Pebbles is our newest member. Her last “home” was a slaughter house where she was kept alone in a dark stall and horribly over fed. She had never seen sunlight until she arrived here! Her first days at the Rescue were full of new experiences and she has made her way through all of them like a trooper. It’s safe to say she LOVES the sunshine and fresh air; she’s made a couple of wallows and happily relaxes in them for long periods of time. She is quickly getting used to being hand fed by visitors and enjoys her new healthy, balanced diet. She’s already shed a few necessary pounds from good diet and exercise. Pebbles is housed on her own and with winter coming, we hope someone will volunteer to help us build her a proper house with insulation.
Pebbles is a Gemini. Her birthday is June 3, 2019.
-
Rosemary
Rosemary arrived at Sweet Acres with Miss Basil and Sweet Pea from a terrible breeder. Of the three she was in the best health which is why it was so surprising when she passed away last Fall. It was unexpected and undetermined as to why. We think of her often and wish her peace and happiness on the other side of the rainbow.
-
Sadie
Sweet and shy, Sadie arrived at Sweet Acres in 2015 from a local farm. She was Kirsten’s first pig who melted her heart with her warm brown eyes and big floppy ears (which she has since grown into). Sadie is a gentle soul who responds to soft-speaking and careful movements. She is quite content wandering off on her own…and watching all the comings and goings from afar. She is very independent. While she could be the Matriarch of the Sanctuary having been the first of all twelve potbelly pigs that have resided at Sweet Acres, she is instead a content and gracious lady who has happily stepped aside. She would much rather focus all her time and attention on her handsome, loving beau, Dozer. He has been the love of her life for almost six years now.
Sadie is a Pisces. Her birthday is March 17, 2015.

Spartacus
A huggable, humble fellow, Spartacus has the sweetest nature. He LOVES all cuddles: from family, friends and even strangers. He is super-chill. For sure, he is a lover, not a fighter which is the opposite of his namesake. Historically, Spartacus was a gladiator who lead a rebellion against the Roman Empire. While our Spartacus is a leader, you won’t find him in the middle of any battles. Nope, he doesn’t have any time for that! It’s no surprise then that children are drawn to him, and he to them. It’s wonderful to watch how kind and trusting he is with everyone. When not hanging out with the humans (ANY humans) you’ll see Spartacus roaming the field, or catching a quick nap in the sun, with his best chum Noah.
Spartacus is a Cancerian. He was born on July 22, 2017, the same day as Noah. (They’re brothers from another mother.)

Sweet Pea
Sweet Pea arrived at Sweet Acres when she was seven months old. She was with her mother Miss Basil and both were severely underfed. Quite literally, they were starving to death. Sweet Pea couldn’t even stand as her legs were too weak to hold her up. She and her mother in no way resembled a pig in shape or form as they had been so badly starved. That ended the day they arrived at Sweet Acres! Kirsten nurtured them both back to good health. Today, Sweet Pea will come to her pen fence and greet you from the safety of it. She is gentle and kind (and loves treats that you may hand feed her) but she stays close to her mother in reassurance. As a result of loving care from Kirsten, Sweet Pea is more trusting of people than her mother.
Sweet Pea is a Gemini and shares the same birthday as Delilah: June 15!

Wellington
Big, bold, and beautiful describes Wellington. She can also be described as a strong and confident leader; she is definitely the boss of her posse. Her maturity is what attracts them all to her, and they are all quite content to happily follow her. Wellington is not intimidating though; she is, simply put, a big softie. Our girl craves human touch and soaks up all the hugs and kisses anyone wants to give her. She is the favourite of children, young and old. because she stands still for cuddles, brushings and compliments, AND will topple quickly if you offer up belly rubs. She loooooves belly rubs. Wellington came from a home in Burlington and is at peace at Sweet Acres. She feels like she belongs and is needed by the other PBPs and all humans. We think so, too!
Wellington is a Libra. She was born on September 24, 2014.
Pigs are highly social animals that require the presence of other pigs for companionship, mental stimulation, and overall well-being. Living with fellow pigs provides them with enrichment, prevents boredom or depression, and allows for the natural expression of their social behaviours. Pigs have a knack for befriending one another, forming strong bonds that contribute to their happiness and quality of life

A Budding Friendship?
It has only been a short time since Pebbles arrived at Sweet Acres, but she has been establishing herself as the Alpha. This has Cardi P and Wellington both sulking after losing ‘challenges’ with her. Interestingly, after the arguments, Noah seems to be hanging around to ensure Pebbles is okay. He is a sweet boy with NO aspirations of being in charge of the herd, so the two of them may just bond. We’ll keep you posted on that possible friendship. In the meantime, because Pebbles is housed on her own and winter is coming, we need to have a shed built for her as soon as possible. We are hoping someone will offer to help us get this made.
